Grandma reached into the drawer beside her chair and pulled out a small envelope.
She set it on the table between us.
"That's the third time Ronnie has used someone I love to get to me," she said quietly.
"The first time was your mother."
I couldn't breathe.
"What do you mean?"
Grandma folded her hands.
"He married her when she was sick, Sophie.
He knew about the insurance policy before she did."
The room felt like it tilted.
"Grandma—"
"I tried to tell her.
She didn't believe me." Her voice didn't shake.
"I've carried that for six years."
I stared at the envelope.
"What's in there?"
"Documents.
His real name.
His record." She paused.
"And something your mother left for you before she passed."
My hands were shaking when I reached for it.
Then my phone buzzed.
A text from Ronnie.
*"How did it go, sweetheart?
She say yes?"*
I looked up at Grandma.
Her eyes were steady.
"That's your choice, Sophie.
What you do next."
