Chapter 2: What He Kept in His Pocket

Part 2 ⬇️

Daniel unwrapped the tissue paper with shaking hands.

Inside was a photograph.

I recognized it immediately — but it made no sense.

It was a picture of Daniel.

Maybe seven or eight years old.

Wearing a pink dress.

Smiling the biggest smile I had ever seen on his face.

"Mom," he said quietly.

"I was born in the wrong body.

I told Dad four months before he died.

I finally told him the truth about who I am."

The room felt like it tilted.

"He didn't take it well at first," Daniel continued.

"He told me I had to choose — live as his son, or lose him completely.

That's why I left."

My throat closed.

"But then he called me two weeks before he died.

He said he'd been wrong.

He asked me to wear the dress to the funeral.

He said he wanted his last gift to me to be his acceptance — in front of everyone."

I couldn't speak.

"He picked this dress himself, Mom.

From a catalog.

He circled it in pen."

Daniel reached back into the pocket.

He pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"There's something else," he whispered.

"Dad left you a letter.

But Mom — I have to warn you.

What's written inside…

it's not just about me."

My hands wouldn't stop shaking as I reached for it.

What Richard wrote in that letter left me unable to breathe.
