Wesley's face went the color of old wax.
Cora set her glass down without a sound.
My daughter's smile didn't disappear all at once — it dissolved, slowly, the way ice does when it finally realizes the room is warmer than it thought.
I didn't sit down.
I didn't need to.
"The card you've been using for the last eight months," I said, "is in my name.
Every charge.
Every dinner.
Every 'listing fee.' I have the statements."
Wesley opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
It was Cora who spoke first.
"This isn't the place—"
"You chose the place," I said.
My daughter reached for the envelope.
I let her open it.
Inside wasn't what they expected.
It wasn't a bill.
It wasn't a threat.
It was a single sheet — a letter from my attorney, dated three days ago, with one paragraph they would need to read more than once.
The table went very quiet.
Then Wesley said something low, something he clearly meant only for me.
And that was when the man at the next table stood up.
I hadn't noticed him when I walked in.
But he had been there the whole time.
And from the look on Wesley's face, he recognized him.
