Chapter 2: Something She Wasn't Supposed to Know

Part 2 ⬇️

The room went completely still.

Ethan didn't raise his voice.

That almost made it worse.

"My mother worked two jobs for twenty years so I never went without.

She glued her own shoes back together so mine could be new.

She told me she'd eaten at work so I could have dinner."

He looked at Rebecca without blinking.

"She ironed that dress twice before she came here tonight.

Because she wanted to make a good impression on people who, it turns out, don't deserve one."

Sophie had gone pale.

Her father put his fork down slowly.

Rebecca opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

"She raised me alone," Ethan continued.

"And everything I am — my degree, my job, the man sitting at your table right now — that's her.

In that dress."

The silence stretched across the whole table.

Then Rebecca did something no one expected.

She reached for her wine glass, took a long sip, and said quietly — almost to herself —

"I had no idea your father left so early."

Something shifted in Ethan's expression.

Just for a second.

And I realized — she knew something about Ethan's father.

Something she wasn't supposed to know.
