Everyone turned to look at me.
Grant turned to look at me.
"Mom.
Sit down."
His voice was quiet.
But it wasn't the quiet I knew.
It wasn't the calm, careful quiet of a man trying to keep the peace.
It was something else entirely.
I sat down.
Grant turned back to the room.
His jaw was tight.
His hand was still shaking around that glass.
"I want to thank everyone for being here today," he said.
"Especially my mother.
Who bought two dresses.
Because she was asked to."
The room went very still.
Vanessa's smile didn't move.
But her eyes did.
"Grant—" she said softly.
"I also want to thank Vanessa's family," he continued.
"For making sure today felt exactly the way they planned it."
Her mother shifted in her seat.
"What is he doing?" someone whispered behind me.
Then Grant set the glass down.
He reached into his jacket pocket.
And pulled out a folded piece of paper.
My breath caught.
Vanessa stood up so fast her chair scraped the floor.
"Grant.
Don't."
He looked at her for a long moment.
"You should have thought about that before you sent this."
He unfolded the paper.
And began to read.
