Chapter 1: The Four Words That Stopped My World

My son's bus driver said four words before driving away — minutes later, I called the police.

Every afternoon, my seven-year-old son, Ethan, came home on the same yellow school bus.

Our routine was always the same.

The bus stopped in front of our house.

Ethan waved goodbye to the driver.

Then he ran straight into my arms.

Until last Thursday.

That afternoon, Ethan stepped off the bus unusually quietly.

He didn't smile.

He wouldn't even look at me.

Instead, he hurried inside without saying a single word.

I stood there, confused, when the bus driver suddenly rolled down his window.

He glanced around, making sure nobody else was listening.

Then he quietly said four words.

"Don't trust the nanny."

Before I could ask what he meant...

He drove away.

My heart started pounding.

Surely there had to be some mistake.

Our nanny, Melissa, had been with us for almost a year.

She seemed wonderful.

Ethan adored her.

Or at least...

I thought he did.

I walked inside and found Ethan sitting silently at the kitchen table.

"Sweetheart," I asked gently, "did something happen today?"

He glanced nervously toward the hallway.

Then he whispered:

"Please don't tell Melissa."

Every hair on my arms stood up.

"What happened?"

He hesitated.

Then he shook his head.

"I promised."

That was enough.

Trying to behave normally, I stepped into the living room.

Melissa was already putting on her coat.

"I'm taking Ethan to the park," she said with a smile.

"No," I replied.

"I think we'll stay home today."

For the first time...

Her smile vanished.

Without saying another word, she grabbed her purse and walked outside.

I watched through the window as she climbed into her car.

But instead of driving away...

She parked across the street.

That was when I knew something was wrong.

I called the police.

The dispatcher told me officers were only a few minutes away.

"Stay inside," she said.

"Do not touch anything."

I promised I wouldn't.

Then Ethan quietly tugged on my sleeve.

"Mom..."

I looked down.

He was staring toward the backyard.

"Melissa said I wasn't supposed to tell you."

My stomach dropped.

"What weren't you supposed to tell me?"

He pointed toward the old wooden playhouse.

For a moment, I couldn't move.

Then I was running before I even realized what I was doing.

I burst through the back door and sprinted across the yard.

The little wooden playhouse stood exactly where it always had.

Quiet.

Ordinary.

But one corner of the roof...

Looked different.

One panel had been lifted just enough to leave a narrow gap.

My heart was pounding so hard I could barely breathe.

I climbed onto the small bench beside it.

Then I froze.

A car door slammed across the street.

I turned.

Melissa had gotten out of her car.

She was running straight toward our backyard.

I looked back at the roof...

And reached for the loose panel.

What was hidden inside that playhouse — and what did Melissa not want this mother to find?
