Chapter 2: Whose Name Is on the Account
Michael's face had gone very still.
"What do you mean she has to authorize it?" he said to Captain Hayes.
"My wife's assistant booked this flight through our family office."
The captain kept his voice level.
"The Harrison Family Aviation Program requires the account holder's approval for every departure, sir.
Mrs.
Harrison is the account holder."
Lauren came down two steps.
"That's not possible.
We've used this service before."
"You have," I said.
"Because I approved it."
Michael turned to me slowly.
"You're doing this on purpose."
"I'm standing on a pavement with my suitcase beside me.
You did this."
He lowered his voice so the children wouldn't hear.
"Don't embarrass this family, Mom."
"Which family, Michael?
The one I cooked for at three in the morning?
Or the one that just removed my luggage?"
Lauren pulled out her phone and stepped away, already calling someone.
I watched her and felt something I hadn't expected — calm.
Then Captain Hayes turned the tablet toward me and said there was one more thing I should be aware of.
The last approved booking on the account wasn't this weekend's trip.
It was a flight two months ago — to a destination I had never approved, carrying passengers I had never authorized.
I looked at the name on the screen.
It wasn't Lauren's assistant who had made that booking.
It was Michael.
