Chapter 2: The Envelope

The room went quiet the moment he walked in.
Not the polite kind of quiet.
The uncomfortable kind.
The kind where people recognize a face they never expected to see again.
He told me later that a few of them actually stepped back.
One woman — a girl who had once poured a drink over his lunch tray in front of the whole cafeteria — stared at him like she'd seen a ghost.
Then the man who had organized the reunion walked over.
His name was Derek.
He had been the worst of them all.
"You weren't invited," Derek said.
My son looked at him calmly.
"I know."
"Then why are you here?"
My son reached into his jacket and pulled out an envelope.
He didn't hand it to Derek.
He walked past him, straight to the front of the room, and asked for everyone's attention.
The music stopped.

"I think you all know why."
He set the envelope down on the table at the front of the room.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
