Spencer grabbed my arm before I reached the driveway.
"You think this is over?
I'll call my attorneys.
I'll fight every single clause."
I looked down at his hand on my arm, then back at his face.
"Spencer.
You signed the property management agreement six years ago.
You signed the credit facility renewal three years ago.
You signed the Apex Holdings operating addendum last November.
Mr.
Miller has every page."
He let go.
Behind him, Evelyn was pulling Penelope toward the house — but Penelope wasn't moving.
She was staring at me with an expression I hadn't expected.
Not anger.
Not triumph.
Fear.
"Penelope." I said her name quietly.
"How far along are you?"
She didn't answer.
Evelyn stepped between us.
"Don't you dare speak to her."
But I had already seen it.
The way Penelope's hand moved to her stomach.
The way her eyes cut sideways toward Spencer.
The way Spencer looked away first.
Something about that pregnancy wasn't what anyone was claiming.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Mr.
Miller.
*"The title search just came back.
There's a second name on the Penelope trust account.
You need to see this before tomorrow morning."*
I read it twice.
Then I looked at Spencer — really looked at him — and understood that I still didn't know the full truth.
Neither did Evelyn.
