I called the lawyer that same night.
His name was Gerald Holt.
He had handled Margaret's estate years ago and still had every document on file.
I read him the property records over the phone, and he went quiet for a moment.
"Walter, this is exactly what I think it is.
That house was never fully transferred.
You still hold a fifty percent ownership interest.
No one can remove you, charge you rent, or restrict your access to shared spaces.
Not legally."
I asked him what we could do.
"I'll send a formal notice tomorrow morning.
Certified mail."
The letter arrived at 9:14 the next day.
I watched from the hallway as Jason pulled the envelope from the front door.
He tore it open right there, still in his jacket.
His face changed.
He read it once.
Then again.
Emily came up behind him.
"What is it?"
He didn't answer her.
He just turned and looked at me standing at the end of the hall.
For the first time since I moved in, Jason had nothing to say.
But then Emily reached out and took the letter from his hand.
I watched her eyes move across the page.
