Chapter 1: The Smile She Forgot She Had

My son-in-law mocked my daughter's new haircut in front of everyone.
My daughter had been talking about cutting her hair for years.
She'd always worn it long because her husband, Ethan, loved it that way.
Every time she mentioned trying something different, he'd laugh and say, "Don't even think about it."
She always laughed too.
But I knew that wasn't really her answer.
Then, one afternoon, she surprised everyone.
She stepped into my house with a beautiful short haircut.
She looked younger.
Happier.
More confident than I'd seen her in years.
"You like it?" she asked nervously.
I hugged her immediately.
"You look absolutely gorgeous." She smiled.
"I finally did something just for me."
That evening, the whole family gathered for my husband's birthday dinner.
The moment Ethan walked through the door, he stopped cold.
He stared at her for several seconds.
Then he burst out laughing.
Loudly.
"What did you do to yourself?"
The room went silent.
"It's just hair," my daughter said softly.
He smirked.
"No...
it looks like you lost a bet."
A couple of relatives laughed awkwardly.
I watched my daughter's smile disappear.
She lowered her eyes and quietly pushed food around her plate.
Ethan kept going.
"I married a woman, not my barber."
Nobody said a word.
Nobody except me.
But I had no idea that what I was about to say would make things so much worse.
