The officer took Brooke's phone and scrolled slowly through the folder.
His expression didn't change.
But he stopped on one file and looked up at Grant.
"Is this your voice?" he asked quietly.
Grant said nothing.
The officer pressed play.
I couldn't hear every word from where I was standing.
But I heard enough.
Grant's voice.
Calm.
Deliberate.
Telling Brooke exactly what he would do to her if she ever spoke to a lawyer.
The young woman who had been recording near the window lowered her phone.
The man at the next table stood up.
Grant's mother grabbed his arm and whispered something sharp in his ear.
He pulled away from her.
Then Brooke said something none of us expected.
"That's not the worst one."
She reached over, scrolled to a second file, and handed the phone back.
"Play that one," she said.
"And then ask him about the account he told me didn't exist."
Grant's face went a color I had never seen on a person before.
His mother stopped talking completely.
And the officer looked at Grant with an expression that made my hands stop shaking for the first time all night.
Whatever was on that second recording — Grant already knew it was over.
But Brooke wasn't done yet.
