Chapter 2: The Envelope My Father Left for Danger

PART 2

I sat across from Christopher at the kitchen table and watched him eat.

He cut his pastry in half.

Offered me a piece.

Smiled.

I smiled back.

Inside, I was shaking so hard I had to press my knees together under the table.

Toby called at 8:15.

I let it go to voicemail.

Christopher glanced at my phone.

"Toby again?" he said.

"He calls you a lot lately."

"He worries about me," I said.

"You know how he is."

Christopher nodded slowly.

"Maybe too much."

Something in his tone made my stomach drop.

I excused myself and locked the bathroom door.

Toby's voicemail was six seconds long.

"Mom.

Don't be alone with him.

And check the safe — the one in the study.

Dad's been in there."

My father's safe.

The one Christopher had asked about twice last year and I'd told him was empty.

It wasn't empty.

Inside was the original deed to the house.

My father's will.

And a sealed envelope I had never opened — one my father left with instructions to open only if I was ever in danger.

I stood in that bathroom staring at my own reflection.

Christopher knocked on the door.

"Gwen?

You okay in there?"

"Fine," I said.

"Just freshening up."

But I was already deciding.

Tonight, I was opening that envelope.
