Chapter 2: The Eyes That Remembered

He was older than I remembered.
But those eyes — Luke's eyes — were unmistakable.
"My name is Daniel," he said quietly.
"I think your son saved my life."
My legs nearly gave out.
He was holding an envelope.
The same kind as the birthday card.
"I'm sorry to come unannounced," he said.
"I've been trying to find the right time for thirteen years."
I couldn't speak.
I just stepped aside and let him in.
Hannah had followed me to the door.
When she saw him, she went completely still.
"You sent the card," she whispered.
He nodded.
"Luke asked me to."
The room went silent.
"That's not possible," I said.
"Luke p@ssed before he ever could have—"
"He wrote it the night before the surgery." Daniel reached into the envelope and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"He gave it to my mother and told her to find a way to deliver it on your daughter's eighteenth birthday.
He made her promise."
Hannah's hand came up to cover her mouth.
"He knew?" she asked.
"He knew he might not make it?"
Daniel looked at her with those familiar eyes, and I felt thirteen years of grief crack open all at once.
"He knew," Daniel said softly.
"And he wanted you to know he was never really gone."
Then his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen, and something shifted in his face.
"I'm sorry," he said.
"I have to take this.
It's about why I really came today — and it's not just about the card."
