Chapter 2: What She Was Hiding

Megan and I talked for over an hour that night.
The more she told me, the colder I felt.
Eric hadn't just kept us apart.
He had been feeding us lies about each other for years.
Every time Megan felt hurt by something I "said," it was Eric.
Every time I felt unwelcome at their home, it was Eric.
And Chloe had been watching all of it.
"He told me last week that you called her spoiled," Megan said quietly.
"That you thought I was raising her wrong."
I closed my eyes.
"Megan.
I have never said a single negative word about how you raise that child."
She was silent for a long moment.
Then: "I believed him.
I'm so sorry."
"Don't apologize to me.
We were both lied to."
I asked her where she was staying.
She hesitated, then told me.
A small hotel twenty minutes away.
She'd been there for three nights, barely eating, convinced that both Eric and I had turned against her.
"He told me the marriage was over," she said.
"That you agreed it was for the best."
My hands tightened on the phone.
"He told you I agreed?"
"Yes."
I sat with that for a moment.
Then I asked the question that had been sitting at the back of my mind since we started talking.
"Megan…
why did he want us both out of the picture at the same time?"
She went very quiet.
"I think," she said slowly, "you need to come see something."

What Megan showed her next left Eric's mom speechless.
The truth was bigger — and darker — than either of them had imagined.
