My hands were shaking before I even unfolded the first page.
They were printed emails.
Dated over the past six months.
Between Richard and Daniel.
I started reading.
The first few were normal enough.
A father reconnecting with his son.
Asking about school.
About Sophie.
Then I reached the third email.
My chest tightened.
Richard wasn't just reconnecting.
He was asking Daniel to change his will.
"You need to protect the baby's future," Richard had written.
"And you need to do it before your mother finds out what I know about her."
I looked up at Sophie.
"What does he know about me?"
She shook her head slowly.
"Keep reading."
The last email was the shortest.
Four sentences.
But by the time I finished it, I couldn't breathe.
Because Richard hadn't just come to celebrate Daniel's graduation.
He had come with something.
A document.
And according to that final email, Daniel had already signed it.
I walked back to the table.
Richard looked up at me and smiled.
Not warmly.
"Glad you finally made it," he said.
"There's something we need to discuss."
Daniel wouldn't meet my eyes.
