Chapter 2: What Bruno Carried Down the Aisle

Inside the purse were three things.
A folded document.
A small key.
And a photograph.
I didn't understand the document at first.
Then I saw Dad's name at the top.
And Laura's signature at the bottom.
It was a deed transfer.
Signed six weeks before he d*ed.
The house.
The land.
Everything.
Transferred to Laura alone.
My hands were shaking.
"She had him sign it," someone behind me whispered.
"Look at the date.
He was already in hospice."
I looked up.
Laura had stopped at the church doors.
She hadn't left.
She was watching me.
"That signature is legal," she said.
"He wanted me to have it."
"He could barely hold a pen six weeks ago."
"He was still of sound mind."
An older woman in the third row stood up slowly.
I recognized her.
Mrs.
Calloway.
Dad's neighbor for over twenty years.
"No," she said quietly.
"He wasn't."
Laura's jaw tightened.
"Stay out of this."
"I was there that afternoon," Mrs.
Calloway said.
"He didn't know what he was signing.
He thought it was a hospital form."
The church went completely still.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from a number I didn't recognize.
*There's something else in that shed.
Bruno knows where.
Don't let her near it.*
---
What was hidden in that shed — and who sent that message?
The full truth is darker than anyone in that church expected.
