Chapter 2: Whatever You Ate or Drank Today

Part 2 ⬇️

At the hospital, they wouldn't let me see my own chart.

A nurse slipped up.

Just one sentence before her supervisor pulled her back.

"Honey, whatever you ate or drank today — we need to know everything."

I hadn't eaten anything unusual.

But I had drunk the tea my mother made me that morning.

The one she insisted on.

The one she stood over me and watched me finish.

My husband heard it too.

He grabbed the cup from my bag — I still had it — and handed it to the officer without a word.

My mother's face went white.

"That's just herbal tea.

I make it for everyone."

"Then you won't mind us testing it," the officer said.

She minded.

She minded so much she started crying and said her heart was weak and she needed to sit down.

My sister was still in the waiting room, telling anyone who would listen that I had provoked her.

That I'd always been jealous.

That the inheritance was never meant for me anyway.

Then my cousin walked in — the one with the recording — and sat down directly across from my sister.

She didn't say a word.

She just opened her phone and pressed play.

My sister's face changed completely.

And that's when my father stood up and said the one thing that made my husband go very, very still.
