Chapter 2: Something That Shouldn't Be There

Part 2 ⬇️

At the hospital, they rushed me into emergency monitoring.

My baby's heartbeat was there.

Faint.

But there.

The doctor pulled my husband aside and spoke in a low voice.

I couldn't hear the words.

But I saw his face change.

"What did he say?" I grabbed his arm the moment he came back.

He didn't answer right away.

He just looked at the door, then back at me.

"They found something in your bloodwork."

"What kind of something?"

"Something that shouldn't be there."

Before he could explain, my mother walked in.

Calm.

Too calm.

She set her purse down like she was visiting for tea.

"How are you feeling, sweetheart?"

My husband stepped between us.

"You need to leave."

"She's my daughter—"

"You need to leave.

Now."

My mother's eyes moved to the monitor beside my bed.

Just for a second.

But it wasn't worry in her expression.

It was calculation.

After she left, the doctor returned with a second form for me to sign.

A report.

At the top, three words stopped my breath.

*Substance found.

Source unknown.*

My sister had kicked me in front of witnesses.

But someone had been working on this much longer than that.

Someone who had access to my food.

My drinks.

My home.
