At the hospital, they wouldn't let me see my own chart.
A nurse leaned close and whispered, "Honey, the doctor needs to speak with your husband first." She glanced toward the door.
"Alone."
Marcus came back ten minutes later.
His face was wrong.
Not scared.
Not sad.
Something colder than both.
"What did they find?" I grabbed his hand.
He sat down slowly.
"They found traces of something in your bloodwork.
Something that shouldn't be there."
"What do you mean?"
"They're running a full tox screen." He looked at me.
"When did you last eat at your mother's house?"
My stomach dropped.
Three days ago.
Sunday dinner.
My mother had insisted I finish every bite.
My sister had watched me the whole time with that small, satisfied smile I hadn't understood until now.
Marcus pulled out his phone and showed me a text he'd received an hour earlier from an unknown number.
*It wasn't just the kick.

This has been going on for weeks.*
I couldn't speak.
My baby still hadn't moved.
Then the door opened — and my sister walked in with my mother, both of them wearing the same expression.
