Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Table

Tom reached into his jacket and pulled out a thick envelope.
He set it on the table without a word.
Rachel's hand moved toward it, but Tom stepped forward.
"Don't," he said quietly.
"That's not for you."
He slid it across to me.
My fingers were shaking as I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Printed.
Dated.
Dozens of them.
Rachel and Michael.
Together.
Not at one party.
Not once.
For months.
"Tom—" Michael started.
"I've known for a long time," Tom said.
"I just wanted to wait until the whole family was here."
My mother made a sound I had never heard from her before.
My father stood up from his chair.
Rachel turned to Michael.
"Say something."
Michael said nothing.
"How long?" I asked.
My voice came out steady, which surprised me.
Tom looked at me with tired eyes.
"The photos go back eight months.
But I think it started before that."
Rachel finally spoke.
"This isn't what it looks like."
Tom laughed.
It wasn't a happy sound.
"There's more in that envelope," he said.
"Keep going."
I reached back in and pulled out a single folded page.
My hands went cold.
It was a lease agreement.
An apartment I had never heard of.
Both their names were on it.
