Chapter 2: The Name She Wasn't Supposed to Say

Andrew pulled out his phone and hit record.
"You said it was a test," he said calmly.
"So I'm documenting the results."
Kayla lunged for the phone.
"Delete that right now!"
"Why?" Andrew didn't move.
"If this is just a test, you have nothing to be embarrassed about."
I stood there frozen.
Kayla's face went from red to white.
"That's not — you can't just —"
"Can't what?" Andrew set the phone on the counter, still recording.
"You've been doing this for two weeks in front of my wife.
In her home.
You called it a favor to her." He looked at her steadily.
"So let's see how you feel when someone else controls the narrative."
Kayla grabbed her towel tighter and looked at me.
I didn't say a word.
"Delete it," she whispered.
"Please."
Andrew picked up the phone, stopped the recording, and looked at her one last time.
"Pack your things, Kayla."
She opened her mouth.
Closed it.
Then she turned and ran upstairs.
I thought that was the end of it.
But twenty minutes later, I heard Kayla on the phone in her room — and the name she said stopped me cold in the hallway.
It wasn't her ex-boyfriend's name.
It was Andrew's brother.
