Chapter 2: The Account She Was Never Supposed to Have

I drove to my mother's house with both children asleep in the back seat before we reached the end of the street.

My cheek had stopped burning.

My hands had stopped shaking.

What I felt instead was something I had not felt in years.

Clear.

My mother opened the door before I knocked.

She took one look at my face, stepped aside, and said nothing.

That was how I knew she had been waiting for this night longer than I had.

In the morning, Nathan called.

"You made me look like a fool in front of my entire family."

"Your sister sl\*pped me at my own table, Nathan."

"You escalated it."

"I defended myself."

Silence.

Then: "My mother thinks you planned this.

That you wanted a reason to leave."

I almost set the phone down.

But then he said something that made me go completely still.

"Vanessa told me about the account, Emily."

I did not breathe.

"What account?"

"Don't play innocent.

She said you've been moving money for months.

That you've been planning this."

My hand tightened around the phone.

Because there was an account.

But Vanessa had no way of knowing about it.

Unless someone had been going through my private records.

And the only person with access to those records was Nathan.

What Emily found when she checked her files that afternoon changed everything she thought she knew about her marriage.
