Chapter 2: The Message at Midnight

Part 2 ⬇️

I drove to my mother's house with both children asleep in the back seat before we reached the end of the street.

She opened the door before I knocked.

She took one look at my face and said nothing.

She simply stepped aside, let me in, and put the kettle on.

I sat at her kitchen table and told her everything.

When I finished, she was quiet for a long moment.

"How long have you known?" she asked.

"Twelve years."

"No." She set her cup down.

"How long have you known what you were going to do?"

I thought about it.

"Since the moment he told me not to make it worse."

She nodded slowly.

"Then you already know what comes next."

My phone had been buzzing since I left.

Nathan.

Then Vanessa.

Then a number I didn't recognize.

I let them all go.

But at 11:47 that night, a message came through from Nathan's cousin — a woman who had never once taken my side in twelve years.

It said only: *Call me.

There's something you need to know about the house.*

I stared at those words for a long time.

Because the house was in my name.

It had always been in my name.

And Nathan knew that.

So why had Vanessa been telling her friends for the past six months that it belonged to the family?
