Chapter 2: Eleven Years of Silence

**— PART 2 —**

My hands were shaking as I read the highlighted sentence a second time.

My father crossed the room in four steps and snatched the will from my hands.

"Where did you get this?"

"Noah had it.

Vanessa told Mom to hide it from me."

He went completely still.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Dad, I can explain—"

"Don't." His voice came out low and flat.

I had never heard him speak to her that way.

Not once in thirty years.

Her new husband put a hand on her arm.

"Vanessa.

What is this?"

She pulled away from him.

My mother was still sitting at the table.

She hadn't moved.

She hadn't looked up.

And that told me everything.

"Mom." I walked toward her.

"Did you know?"

She pressed her lips together.

"How long?"

She finally looked at me.

Her eyes were wet.

"Emily, it was complicated—"

"How long?"

"Since Grandpa passed."

That was eleven years ago.

Eleven years.

Noah was a baby.

And they had already decided what to hide and who to protect.

Vanessa's voice came sharp across the room.

"It doesn't matter.

The property was transferred legally.

Whatever that paper says, it's too late."

My father turned slowly.

"Is that what your lawyer told you?"

Vanessa said nothing.

He looked at the will again.

Then he looked at me.

"Emily.

Call your attorney.

Tonight."
