Chapter 2: The Box With No Ring

Inside the box was no ring.

Just a folded note — and a small photograph.

She snatched the note before anyone else could reach it.

Her eyes moved fast across the words.

Then she stopped.

She read it again.

Slower this time.

"What does it say?" my brother asked.

She didn't answer.

She just set the note down on the table, face completely blank.

My brother picked it up.

He read it once.

Then he looked at her — not with confusion, but with something colder.

"Did you know about this?" he said quietly.

"I don't know what she's talking about," she snapped.

"Your mother was confused at the end.

Everyone knows that."

The lawyer cleared his throat.

"Mrs.

Wilson was of sound mind when she prepared these instructions.

She was very specific."

"Then where is it?" she demanded.

"Where is the actual ring?"

The lawyer paused.

"That is explained in the second envelope."

The room went still.

No one had noticed a second envelope until that moment — sitting underneath the box, sealed, with one name written on the front in our mother's handwriting.

It wasn't her name.

She saw it at the same time we did.

Her chair scraped back hard against the floor.

"That's not fair," she whispered.

"That is not fair."
