Chapter 2: The Man She Never Expected to See

Lauren's smile vanished the moment she recognized him.
It was David — her car mechanic.
The same man she'd told my mom had charged her $5,000 to fix her SUV.

She didn't say a word.
Her hands gripped the edge of the table.
I'd done my homework.

"The repair came to $1,200," he said.

She paid me in cash.
I can show you the date."

My brother slowly turned to look at his wife.
Lauren's mouth opened, then closed.
Then she said, almost in a whisper:
"That's…
that's not the right invoice."
David didn't blink.
"I only wrote one."
My mom sat at the end of the table, saying nothing.
But her eyes were full of tears.
And that's when Lauren did something none of us expected.
She stood up — and reached for her phone.

What Lauren did next — and what she said on that call — changed everything.
