Chapter 2: The Woman Who Was Silenced

Samuel's voice was steady when he called back at midnight.
It wasn't steady anymore.
"Cesare, I'm looking at eleven separate payments.
All approved in the last fourteen months.
All connected to Ethan's vendors.
Total amount…" He paused.
"Just over $2.3 million."
I sat at my kitchen table without moving.
"Were any of them legitimate?" I asked.
"Maybe two.
The rest have the same pattern — inflated amounts, shell company names, your authorization stamp on documents that were never submitted through proper channels."
I thought about Julian pushing through that rush payment.
I thought about Ethan's face when he saw the flower.
"Who signed off on the approvals?" I asked.
Samuel went quiet for a moment too long.
"Julian's name is on most of them," he said.
"But Cesare…
on the three largest payments, the signature isn't Julian's.
Someone forged yours."
I stood up slowly.
Upstairs, Elsie was still asleep.
She had no idea that the little flower she made from torn office paper had just exposed something that could destroy two men — and drag my family's name through every courtroom in the city.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice said quietly, "Mr.
Bellini.
My name is Diane.
I worked in your foundation's accounts office until three months ago.
I need to tell you why I was let go."
She stopped.
Then she said, "I saw what Julian and Ethan were doing.
May you like
I reported it internally.
The next week, I was gone."
