Chapter 2: The Envelope

Part 2 ⬇️

Rachel didn't move from the altar.

She stood there in Claire's wedding dress, holding the veil in both hands, watching me like she was waiting for me to collapse.

I didn't.

"Where is she?" I asked again.

Rachel's voice dropped so low I almost couldn't hear it over the murmuring crowd.

"She didn't want to be here, Mark."

Those words landed like a fist.

Lily tightened her grip on my hand.

Claire's mother made a small sound — half breath, half sob — and sat back down.

"She knew," I said.

It wasn't a question.

Rachel looked at the floor.

"We both did."

The chapel had gone completely still.

Two hundred people, not one of them breathing.

I thought about every dinner.

Every weekend.

Every night Claire had seemed distracted and I had told myself it was work stress.

"How long has she been planning this?"

Rachel finally looked up.

"Mark…

there's something about Claire you don't know.

Something she was afraid to tell you herself."

She reached into the small bouquet she was still holding and pulled out a folded envelope.

My name was written on the front in Claire's handwriting.

"She left this for you.

She made me promise to give it to you today."

I stared at the envelope but didn't take it.

"Why today?"

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

"Because today was the last day she could."
