Chapter 2: What She Hid in the Dress

Chloe couldn't stop shaking.
I held her against me and felt her whole body trembling as two hundred guests stood frozen in that chapel, watching us.
Eric had Claire by the arm.
She wasn't fighting him.
She was smiling.
"Let her explain," Claire said calmly, nodding toward Chloe.
"Go on.
Tell him what you did in Boston.
Tell him who you were before you became his perfect bride."
"Chloe." I pulled back just enough to see her face.
"Look at me.
What is she talking about?"
Chloe opened her mouth.
Closed it.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Then Robert stepped forward.
Chloe's own father.
And the look on his face wasn't relief that his daughter was safe.
It was something older than that.
Something that looked like guilt.
"Dad," Chloe whispered.
"Don't."
He wouldn't meet her eyes.
Claire laughed softly.
"He already knows, sweetheart.
He's always known."
The chapel went so quiet I could hear Lily breathing against my shoulder.
Then Claire reached into the neckline of the wedding dress and pulled out a folded piece of paper she had hidden there.
She held it toward me.
"She wasn't going to tell you before the wedding," Claire said.
"So I made sure she didn't get the chance."
Chloe grabbed my arm.
"Mark, please — don't open it.
Not here.
Not like this."
But Robert had already turned away.
And that told me everything.
