Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Part 2 ⬇️

Mr.

Albright sat down heavily in his chair.

"Miss Parker, your grandfather was one of the most significant private clients this bank has ever had."

I didn't move.

"What does that mean?"

He opened the box carefully, as if he already knew what was inside.

There was a sealed envelope, a small brass key, and a folded document with the bank's letterhead across the top.

"It means," he said quietly, "that Charles Parker didn't leave you a memory.

He left you a vault account.

One that has been sitting untouched for eleven years."

My throat tightened.

"How much?"

Mr.

Albright looked at the number on the document.

Then he turned it to face me.

I grabbed the edge of his desk.

"That's not possible."

"He added to it every year.

Quietly.

He told no one."

I thought about Brianna's face that morning.

Her champagne glass.

Her smile.

I thought about Dad asking me for $5,000.

"Does my family know this account exists?"

Mr.

Albright hesitated one second too long.

"Miss Parker…

your father came in here two weeks ago.

He had a document.

He said you had agreed to sign over power of attorney."

The room went completely still.

"I never signed anything."

He opened his drawer and placed a single sheet of paper on the desk.

At the bottom was my signature.

Except I had never held that pen.
