Chapter 2: The Man Who Didn't Move

The paramedics arrived before Preston could say another word.

While they checked Sophie's head, I watched my brother's face.

The confidence was still there.

He straightened his jacket, accepted a glass of champagne from a passing server, and leaned toward my father like nothing had happened.

"She'll be fine," Preston said quietly.

"And when the police review this, all they'll see is a child caught stealing."

My father nodded once.

That nod told me everything I needed to know about thirty years of my life.

The hotel manager appeared at my side — a small, careful man named Mr.

Holt.

He spoke in a low voice.

"Ma'am.

I need you to know something before the officers come in."

I looked at him.

"Our security team reviewed the ballroom footage the moment your brother picked up the microphone." He paused.

"We saw who put the phone in your daughter's jacket."

My mother, who had been standing close enough to hear, went completely still.

Preston set his champagne glass down slowly.

Mr.

Holt looked at me, then at the door where two police officers had just entered the ballroom.

"We've already saved the file," he said.

"And there's something else on the recording." He hesitated.

"Something that happened much earlier tonight.

Something involving your daughter and a member of the wedding party."

Preston took one step forward.

"You don't want to do this," he said quietly.

Mr.

Holt didn't move.
