Chapter 1: The Day My Parents Showed Up Looking Like Strangers

My Parents Showed Up to My College Move-In Dressed Like They Were Homeless — I Was Mortified Until My Dad Admitted They Had Done It on Purpose

The moment my parents stepped out of their car on my college move-in day, I genuinely thought they had lost their minds.

My dad was wearing ripped jeans, a stained T-shirt, and an old jacket I hadn't seen him wear in years.

My mom had intentionally messed up her hair, put on an oversized sweatshirt with holes near the sleeves, and even had dirt smeared across one side of her face.

To make things worse, they had packed some of my belongings into black garbage bags.

I just stood there staring at them.

For context, my parents are not poor.

Not even close.

My dad owns a small chain of businesses, my mom has a good career of her own, and while we're definitely not private-jet rich, I grew up very comfortably.

They also normally care about how they look.

My dad won't even go to Home Depot without changing out of his yard-work clothes.

So seeing them standing in the middle of my university parking lot looking like they had been sleeping in their car made absolutely no sense.

"Dad...

what are you wearing?"

He glanced down at himself.

"Clothes."

"Don't do that.

Why do you look like this?"

Mom just shrugged.

"Long morning."

And then, of course, my roommate, Chloe, pulled up with her parents.

Perfect timing.

Chloe and I had been talking online for about two months before move-in.

She seemed nice, although I had noticed that she asked a LOT of questions about my family.

What did my parents do?

Where did we live?

Was the car in one of my Instagram pictures mine?

Had I traveled to Europe before?

At the time, I hadn't thought much of it.

Then her family stepped out of a brand-new SUV and came over to introduce themselves.

Chloe looked at my parents.

And I watched her expression shift.

It was subtle, but I noticed.

First, she looked at Dad's ripped jeans.

Then at the garbage bags.

Then at me.

"Oh," she said.

Just...

"Oh."

Her mom smiled, but it was one of those tight smiles people give when they're trying very hard not to show what they're thinking.

My dad held out his hand.

"Nice to meet you."

Chloe's father actually hesitated before shaking it.

I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me.

Then Dad somehow made the situation even worse.

He picked up two garbage bags and said, "Guess we'd better get her stuff upstairs before they tow us."

Chloe immediately glanced toward our car.

Except it wasn't even our normal car.

My parents had apparently borrowed my uncle's ancient, beat-up minivan.

That was when I knew something was definitely going on.

"What happened to your car?" I whispered.

Dad simply said, "This one still runs."

I was furious.

Once we got inside the dorm, things became even more uncomfortable.

My parents were friendly with everyone.

Maybe TOO friendly.

Dad introduced himself to Chloe's parents.

Mom complimented Chloe's bedding.

They offered to help carry boxes.

But Chloe barely said anything to them.

And every time one of her friends walked into the room, I noticed her pulling them aside and whispering to them.

At one point, I actually heard her say:

"I didn't know."

I had no idea what that was supposed to mean.

About twenty minutes later, Chloe's mom asked my mother what she did for work.

Mom paused.

Then said, "Oh, a little bit of everything."

I almost choked.

My mother has had the same job for fourteen years.

Eventually, I pulled her into the hallway.

"What are you doing?" I hissed.

Mom looked completely innocent.

"This whole thing!

The clothes.

The van.

The garbage bags.

You're acting strange."

My parents looked at each other.

Then they nodded.

My dad leaned over my shoulder and quietly whispered the truth.

And when he finally told me why they had dressed like that on purpose, I realized my dad was a genius.
