That text was the last message I ever replied to.

I set my phone face-down on the kitchen counter, walked to the window, and stared at the street where Julian used to park his car.

The space was empty.

It had been empty for three days.

I kept expecting to see his headlights.

I had run out of tears somewhere between the chapel and the cemetery.

My husband and two children were in the ground, and my mother was worried about a brunch reservation.
