Chapter 2: What the Screen Showed

My father's eyes moved to Julian.

Then to the briefcase.

Then back to me.

"Who is this?" he asked slowly.

"My estate lawyer," I said.

"He was here earlier tonight."

The takeout coffee slipped slightly in my mother's hand.

"Miranda." Her voice dropped.

"What did you do?"

Julian didn't speak.

He simply closed his briefcase with a quiet click and stepped toward the door.

"Wait—" my father said sharply.

"Wait a moment."

Julian paused.

"Whatever she signed tonight," my father said, "she was on medication.

She wasn't thinking clearly.

That has to be grounds to—"

"Dad." My voice was still weak.

But it was steady.

"Stop."

My mother set the coffee down on the bedside table.

Her hands were shaking now.

"We came as soon as we could," she whispered.

"Lauren needed us.

You know how she gets.

You've always been the strong one, Miranda.

We thought you were fine."

I looked at her for a long moment.

"You thought I was fine," I repeated quietly.

Neither of them answered.

Then my father pulled out his phone.

His jaw tightened as he scrolled.

"The lake house," he said.

"It's already—"

He stopped.

Something on that screen made him go completely still.
