Chapter 2: The Morning They Showed Me Who They Were

The voicemail was not the last one.

Over the next four days, Mom called eleven times.

I saved every single one.

The messages started as pressure.

Then they became threats.

By the fourth day, she stopped pretending.

"You think you're so smart, Claire.

You think that little business makes you better than this family.

We will fix that."

I played it twice.

Then I forwarded it to my attorney.

A walk-in refrigerator left open all night.

Thousands of dollars in inventory destroyed.

My site manager called me before the police did.

He was standing in the middle of the kitchen, voice shaking.

"Claire…

the cameras.

Someone tried to cover them.

But only someone who knew exactly where they were would have known which ones to go for."

I felt something go cold inside me.

The police took the report.

My insurance company was called within the hour.

Sterling Hospitality's legal team was copied on everything before noon.

Then my phone rang.

It was Madison.

She didn't ask if I was okay.

She didn't pretend to be shocked.

She said, "Are you ready to be reasonable now?"

I said nothing.

I just let the recording run.

Then Dad's voice came through in the background, low and certain:

"She'll have no choice once they see the second location."

---

What did he mean by the second location?

Claire was about to find out — and it was worse than anything she had prepared for.
