Chapter 2: The Signature That Was Never Mine

The nurse at the hospital asked me three times if I wanted to report what had happened.
Three times I said no.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I already knew what I was going to do — and it didn't need a police report to work.
Elliot arrived at the hospital just after midnight.
He sat beside my bed, looked at the stitches above my eye, and said nothing for a long moment.
Then: "Margaret.
Do you understand what activating all provisions means?"
"Tell me anyway."
"Daniel's construction loan is secured against the house.
The house sits inside the trust lien.
As of tonight, that lien cannot be released, refinanced, or transferred without your written approval."
I nodded.
"His company has a draw scheduled Friday.
Without that release, the bank won't fund it."
"I know."
Elliot leaned forward.
"There's something else.
When I pulled the trust records tonight, I found a signature on a discretionary amendment form.
Dated four months ago."
I went still.
"It wasn't your signature, Margaret."
Someone had already tried to alter the trust — before the guardianship was ever filed.
Before the glass broke.
Before any of it.
And the signature they used wasn't mine.
