The moving crew had already stacked everything on the lawn by the time Mom's car pulled in.
Furniture, boxes, old photo albums, Scott's fishing gear — all of it sitting in the driveway like a yard sale.
Mom got out of the car and just stood there.
Then she started screaming.
"You had no right!
That house was OURS!"
I wasn't there.
But Scott's wife, Renee, called me from the driveway, and I could hear everything.
"Erica, your mother is having a breakdown.
You need to fix this right now."
I said, "There's nothing to fix.
The sale closed Friday."
Silence.
Then Renee said something I never expected.
"You don't know what you just did.
Scott had already borrowed against that property.
He told the bank it was his."
I went cold.
"He did what?"
"He's been telling people for two years that the lake house was going into his name when Linda passed.
He showed them documents, Erica.
I don't know where he got them."
I pulled up my email.
There was already a message from a number I didn't recognize — sent three days before the closing.
I had never opened it.
The subject line read: *"Before you sell — you need to see this first."*
