Chapter 2: His Exact Eyes

My legs nearly gave out.
I looked at the paper in Lauren's hand, then at little Rosie standing quietly beside her, still holding that stuffed rabbit.
"What do you mean?" I whispered.
"Ethan saved her because she needed a kidney.
That's all."
Lauren shook her head slowly.
"That's what he wanted you to believe."
She held the paper out to me.
My hands were shaking so badly I could barely take it.
It was a letter.
Ethan's handwriting.
I recognized it immediately — the way he looped his E's, the way he pressed too hard on the pen.
I read the first line.
Then I stopped breathing.
"He knew Rosie before any of this," Lauren said quietly.
"Long before she got sick."
I looked up at her.
"What are you saying?"
She glanced down at Rosie, then back at me.
Her voice dropped so low I almost missed it.
"He made me promise never to tell you.
But you deserve to know who your son really was."
Rosie tugged at Lauren's sleeve and looked up at me with Ethan's eyes.
His exact eyes.
