Chapter 2: She Had Her Eyes

Part 2 — continued from the comments ⬇️
She had Lily's eyes.
The same shape.
The same color.
The same quiet sadness I remembered from the last morning I ever saw my daughter alive.
My hand went to the wall to keep myself standing.
"Mom."
One word.
That was all she said.
But the voice — God, the voice — it cracked right down the middle, the way Lily's always did when she was trying not to cry.
"That's not possible," I whispered.
"I identified your body.
I planned your funeral.
I buried you."
Her face collapsed.
"I know," she said.
"I know you did.
And I'm so sorry."
"Sorry?" My voice came out strange.
Hollow.
"Lily, I have visited a grave for thirteen years."
She reached out and took my hand.
Her fingers were cold and shaking.
"Mom, there's something I have to tell you.
Something I should have told you a long time ago."
Before she could say another word, the door swung open behind me.
A man stepped into the room.
Lily's whole body went rigid the moment she saw him.
"You need to leave," she said.
Her voice had changed completely — flat, tight, afraid.
He didn't move.
He just looked at her, then slowly looked at me.
And smiled.
"So," he said quietly.
"She finally found you."
