Chapter 2: What She Left Behind

Ava didn't look away.
She looked me straight in the eye and said, "Your mom asked me to."
I couldn't speak.
"Before she passed," Ava continued, her voice steady but soft, "she called me.
She said Jett was going to fall apart without her.
She made me promise to check on him.
She specifically said — Fridays.
She said Fridays were always the hardest day for him."
My throat tightened.
"She never told me any of this."
"She didn't want you to worry." Ava glanced toward the house.
"She knew you were already carrying so much."
I stood there in the cold, trying to process what I was hearing.
My mother had planned this.
Quietly, carefully, without a word to anyone.
Then Ava said something that stopped me completely.
"There's something else.
Something she asked me to give him — but only when the time felt right." She reached into her bag and pulled out a small sealed envelope.
"I think it's time."
I stared at it.
My mother's handwriting was on the front.
It said: *For Jett.
Open when you're ready to smile again.*
My hands were shaking.
"Does he know about this?" I whispered.
Ava shook her head slowly.
"Not yet."
