Chapter 2: The Call That Should Not Exist

Part 2 ⬇️

I stood there holding Sophie, my hands shaking.

Vanessa's face had gone white.

"That's just the TV," she said quickly.

"Sophie's confused.

She's been through a trauma."

But Sophie pressed her face against my neck and whispered, "No, Daddy.

I know Mommy's voice."

I looked at Vanessa's phone.

The call was still connected.

I grabbed it.

"Rachel?"

Silence.

Then the line went d*ad.

Vanessa snatched the phone back.

"You're being ridiculous.

Your daughter almost dr*wned and you're chasing ghosts."

"I saw the camera, Vanessa."

Her eyes went still.

That was the moment I knew she wasn't surprised.

She was calculating.

"You don't understand what you're getting into," she said quietly.

"Then explain it to me."

She didn't answer.

She just looked at Sophie with an expression I had never seen on her face before.

It wasn't guilt.

It was something colder.

I pulled Sophie closer and took a step back.

That was when my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

*"Don't let her take my daughter.

I've been trying to get back to you for two years.

Vanessa is not who you think she is."*
