Chapter 2: The Sign on the Lockbox

Part 2 ⬇️
I had called an electrician that morning and asked him to install a lockbox over my outdoor outlet.
Password protected.
Completely inaccessible without the code.
Simple.
Legal.
And completely mine.
But that wasn't what made Monica scream.
When she crouched down and saw what was attached to the lockbox, she lost it.
I had printed a small laminated sign and zip-tied it right to the front.
It read:
*"This outlet is privately metered.
Unauthorized use = $0.38 per kWh.
You owe $143.60.
Invoice sent to your address.
Payment due in 7 days."*
She spun around and stormed toward my door.
"You had NO RIGHT to do that!
You can't charge me!
I'll call the police!"
I opened the door calmly.
"Please do.
I have two weeks of security camera footage ready to send them."
Her face went white.
Then her husband appeared at the end of the driveway.
He'd heard the screaming.
He looked at Monica.
Then at the sign.
Then back at Monica.
"What is this?" he said quietly.
"Monica…
how long has this been going on?"
She didn't answer.
And the look on her face told me her husband had no idea she'd been doing this.
What he said next stopped everyone on that street completely cold.
