Chapter 1: The Night I Caught Her

My neighbor secretly charged her electric car from my house every night and refused to pay my electricity bill — instead of calling the police, I came up with something even better.
I'm a 60-year-old widow who lives alone in a small suburban house, so my electricity bill is usually pretty predictable.
That's why I nearly fainted when last month's bill suddenly came in at twice the usual amount.
I couldn't understand why.
Nothing had changed.
I hadn't bought any new appliances, and everything in the house was running the same way it always had.
I figured I'd call the electric company the next morning to find out if there had been some kind of mistake.
But that night, I couldn't fall asleep.
Suddenly, I heard a strange noise outside my window.
When I looked outside, I was completely shocked by what I saw.
My neighbor, Monica, was charging her Tesla using electricity from my house.
She had parked her car as close to my garage as possible, and a charging cable ran from the outdoor outlet on the wall of my garage all the way to her car.
I immediately stepped outside and asked:
"Monica, what are you doing?"
She just shrugged and replied:
"Charging my car.
Is that a problem?"
I could barely stop myself from yelling.
"But you're charging your car from my house!"
She sighed as if I were the one being unreasonable.
"Oh, come on.
You live alone.
How much electricity do you even need?
Don't be so selfish!
You can afford to pay for electricity.
You're retired and stay home all day.
I have three kids."
I couldn't believe my ears.
Monica had three children, a newer house, a beautifully landscaped yard, and a brand-new Tesla.
She wasn't poor.
She was just unbelievably cheap.
Once, she helped herself to my lawn mower without asking.
Another time, she simply took one of my garden gnomes because it "looked better in her yard."
Those were small things, but they clearly showed what kind of person she was.
When I told her that she was using my electricity, that my bill had doubled, and that she needed to pay me back, she just laughed and said:
"It probably only costs a few dollars.
I'm not paying for that.
God, you're so greedy!"
That was it.
I'd had enough.
It was time to show Monica that neighbors deserved to be treated with respect.
So I smiled and went back inside.
The next morning, I installed something near my garage.
A special surprise for Monica.
When she came back that evening to charge her car again, she screamed so loudly that the entire neighborhood came outside to see what was happening.
---
What did she install — and what made Monica scream in front of the whole neighborhood?
