Chapter 2: Responsibility Returned

Part 2 — continued from the comments ⬇️
At 7:15 I was already outside with a shovel, a bag, and a plan.
I collected every single deposit that dog had left on my lawn over the past week.
Every one.
I wasn't angry.
I was calm.
I was practically cheerful.
I walked to her front step and left it there.
Neatly.
With a handwritten note that said:
*"I believe these belong to you.
Responsibility returned."*
Then I went inside, made coffee, and watched from my kitchen window.
At 7:40 she came out in her yoga clothes.
She saw the bag first.
Then the note.
She looked up at my house.
I didn't move.
She stood there for a long moment — and then she did something I didn't expect.
She pulled out her phone and made a call.
I couldn't hear the words.
But I watched her face go from embarrassed to something else entirely.
Something harder.
When she hung up, she looked at my house one more time.
And she smiled.
That smile sat wrong with me all day.
Like she knew something I didn't.
Then at 4pm, there was a knock at my door.
