Chapter 2: The Voice on the Other End

Part 2 ⬇️
The officer didn't answer me.
He just held up one hand — firm, like I was a stranger who had wandered too close to a crjme scene.
"Ma'am, I need you to step back.
Now."
"That's my car," I said.
"What are those letters?"
He turned away and spoke quietly into his radio.
I caught two words.
*Stolen vehicle.*
The ground felt unsteady under me.
"That's impossible.
I have the title.
I bought it from a private seller — I have all the paperwork."
The older officer looked at me.
Not unkind.
But not reassuring either.
"We'll need that paperwork."
Across the lawn, Linda had gone completely silent.
She wasn't shouting anymore.
She was staring at my SUV with an expression I couldn't read.
Not guilt.
Not anger.
Something closer to fear.
One of the younger officers walked over to her and said something low.
Her face went white.
"I didn't know," she said.
"I swear I didn't know what it was."
"Didn't know *what*?" I called out.
Nobody answered me.
Then my phone buzzed.
A number I didn't recognize.
I almost ignored it — but something made me answer.
The voice on the other end was a woman.
Older.
Shaking.
"Is this the woman with the white SUV on Carver Street?"
"Yes.
Who is this?"
A long pause.
"That car belonged to my son."
She stopped.
"He's been missing for two years."
