Chapter 2: The Names on the Screen

He finally looked up from the laptop and set it aside slowly, like a man being interrupted from something that actually mattered to him.
"Tessa." His voice was flat.
"Call a cab."
"Grant, I'm in labor.
My blood pressure—"
"I heard you." He picked his phone up off the table.
Face up this time.
"I have somewhere I need to be."
Another contraction hit.
I gripped the counter and breathed through it.
When I looked up, he was already typing a message to someone.
"Who are you texting right now?"
He didn't answer.
"Grant.
Who is she?"
He stood up, straightened his new shirt, and said the words I will never forget.
"You've been dead weight for months.
I'm done pretending otherwise."
I didn't cry.
Something inside me went very still.
I called my own car.
I picked up my hospital bag from the bedroom doorway — the one I had packed alone, three weeks earlier, because he had never once asked about it.
As I walked past the dining table, I noticed his laptop screen had not gone dark yet.
There was a real estate listing open.
A house I had never seen.
And two names on the saved search.
His.
And someone else's.
