Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Table

Part 2 ⬇️
Ava took a slow breath and looked straight at me.
"Dad, we've been seeing a specialist.
A different kind.
Not the ones you've been taking us to our whole lives."
I stared at her.
"What kind of specialist?"
"A neurosurgeon," Mia said quietly.
"We found him ourselves.
About fourteen months ago."
Fourteen months.
They had been carrying this for fourteen months without saying a word to me.
"We didn't want to get your hopes up," Ava said quickly.
"We've watched you your whole life never complain, never ask for anything, just give and give and give.
We couldn't tell you until we knew for sure."
My throat tightened.
"Knew what for sure?"
They looked at each other again.
That same look.
The one I'd been watching across the kitchen table my entire adult life.
Mia reached into the bag hanging from her wheelchair and pulled out a folded envelope.
She set it on the table and slid it toward me slowly.
"The results came back last week," she said.
"Dad…
there's a procedure.
A real one.
And the doctor says we're both candidates."
I couldn't speak.
My hands wouldn't move toward the envelope.
"There's something else," Ava said, her voice dropping.
"Something we found out while we were going through all of this.
Something about why Mom really left."
