Chapter 2: The Name That Should Not Exist

Part 2 ⬇️
The engraving was a name.
Not a stranger's name.
A name I recognized immediately — one I hadn't heard spoken out loud in over fifteen years.
My hands started shaking.
Ethan looked up at me.
"Mom?
What does it say?"
I couldn't answer him.
I just stood there holding that gold bar, reading the same line over and over like my brain refused to accept it.
My husband came over and took it from me.
He read it once, then looked at me with an expression I'd never seen on his face before.
"Rebecca," he said quietly.
"How is this possible?"
The note.
I grabbed it again and flipped it over.
There was a second line on the back that I'd missed completely.
It said: *"He would have wanted Ethan to have this.
He always knew."*
I sat down right there on the kitchen floor.
Because the name on that gold bar belonged to someone who was supposed to be gone.
Someone our family had grieved.
Someone Ethan had never met — and had no way of knowing existed.
But somehow, the man sitting against that wall with his dog…
I pulled up the photo on my phone.
The one Ethan had taken without telling me, right before we left.
I zoomed in on the man's face.
And my breath stopped.
