Chapter 2: Four Words on the Back of a Photograph

Part 2 ⬇️
Mr.
Delgado slid a small key across the desk without a word.
My hands were shaking as I fit it into the lock.
The box opened with a soft click.
Inside was a folded letter, a USB drive, and a photograph I had never seen before — Frank and me, taken on a Tuesday afternoon three years into our marriage, sitting on the back porch.
I didn't even know anyone had taken it.
On the back, in Frank's handwriting, were four words.
*She stayed.
She loved.*
I pressed my hand over my mouth.
Mr.
Delgado spoke carefully.
"There is also a second document in there, Patricia.
Frank updated his estate plan eight months ago.
Brad and Stephanie were not informed."
I looked up at him.
"The house," he said, "is yours.
Fully and without condition.
But that's not the part Frank was most concerned about." He paused.
"He told me there was something Brad and Stephanie had done — something you never knew about — and he wanted you to have the proof before they could get to you first."
My throat tightened.
"What did they do?"
He folded his hands on the desk.
"There is a recording on that USB drive.
Frank made it himself.
He said you would understand everything once you heard it."
I reached into the box and picked up the drive.
That was the moment my phone rang.
Brad's name was on the screen.

What's on that recording — and why is Brad calling right now?
